From slaveoftv to scarletfixations

I know...I know this is my 3rd change for my url but as they say the 3rd time's a charm. This time, I'm sticking with http://scarletfixations.blogspot.com. I just feel that even though I am a slave of tv, I'm also a slave of the color red so I wanted to aurl that has something a touch of red and since i'll be writing about my addictions hence scarletfixations came into birth. So hopefully this will is it. No more changes for me. From now on http://scarletfixations.blogspot.com is here to stay.

SAMortalization of Maricar Reyes

She was 1st a neophyte actress as the dying Candy in Betty La Fea , we saw her improve with the sophisticated Karen for Lover’s in Paris and the pitiful Celina in Kung Tayo’y Magkakalayo. This time, Maricar Reyes is excellent as Samantha “Sam” Imperial in abs-cbn primetime show “Imortal”, a show revolving around a forbidden love between the "chosen one" from two warring clans, the bampiras (vampires) and the lobos (werewolves) with the rest of humanity caught in the middle.

In my own opinion, Maricar’s latest venture as the vampire Samantha is her break out role to date. Majority of her scenes (with some minor misses) showed strength and character. MR has adapted to the character with ease. I have notice certain comfort ability in her acting that was somewhat missing from her previous roles. So good was she with her portrayal that a lot of the viewers are having a hard time separating the role from the actress, causing ruckus over the show’s loyal viewers, some admiring and others hating the role. Read the dedicated forums for the show and you’ll see what I mean.

What makes Samantha Imperial click? Aside from the actress, the underlying factor is credited to good conceptualization & how well written the character’s story arc is. Introduce as a ruthless and evil vampire leader from the show’s premises, the character has since then evolved into a rather complex position that it’s hard to label the character as one of the protagonists or antagonists of the show There is so much room for character development with the character going either way. From the episodes aired last December to the present, it’s becoming evident that Samantha may be a support role yet very much essential for the over-all story arc and development of one major character. I can almost consider her in 3rd lead mold instead of a mere supporting role. It’s no wonder that character and actress has gained her own following from the show’s viewers. Samantha was the unsung heroine of the show and viewer reaction manifested with the birth of the term SAMortal coined by the show’s followers.

Maricar Reyes’ exposure for Imortal has widened her audience, allowing the actress make her mark in the industry. She is a work in progress. For now, she may not be in league with today’s leading stars but she has the promise of evolving into a great & versatile actress in the future. I’m thinking in the molds of Angel Aquino and Cherrie Gil wherein she can carry both protagonist and antagonist role.

Find Love with Lost Valentine

Jennifer Love Hewitt is living up to her second name as she stars in Hallmark's Valentine s Day offering the romantic drama Lost Valentine along with Betty White and Sean Farris.

Betty White is Carolyn, wife of Neil Thomas, a USA pilot that went missing in action during World War Two. Carolyn for 66 six years that his husband went missing never miss going to the train station every Valentine’s Day just to relish the last time she saw her husband when he left to fight the war. Susan (Love) assigned to do a story featuring Carolyn and her love story develop a special bond with Carolyn and her grandson Lucas whom eventually Susan fell in love with. Susan’s friendship with Carolyn led her to pursue a search for the missing pilot. Following a lead Susan finally got in touch with a Morang a Filipino guerilla who rescued Neil and through a video conference he was able to relate what happened to Neil after he went MIA. Neil sacrifice his own life by sending out a comrade who was badly wounded back to the American soldiers while he with the Filipino guerillas. He was eventually shot by a sniper when he chose to save a young boy. The story culminated with the recovery of Neil’s body and his personal effects including the heart card and picture w/ Carolyn and their baby that Neil had always carried finally ending Carolyn’s waiting for her husband’s return.

Hallmark’s Lost Valentine is a tv-movie for everyone out there who loves heartwarming love stories. It is a movie for the romantics, those who love Love, those who relish the feeling of falling in love and those who believe in One True Love, Love that lasts a lifetime and knows no boundaries. It will tug your heart and warm your soul. There’s also a strong chance of shedding a tear or two if you’re emotional. A feel good movie about true love, Betty White as Carolyn represents the yearnings of love from long ago, a love that never faded and took 66 years to find closure. JLH’s story arc on the other hand represents the promise of a new beginning, of finding love when one isn’t even looking, of finding that one special person.

I can’t imagine the years of loneliness Carolyn has to endure, not knowing what really happened to her husband. For a short while, I thought that Neil would turn out to be alive, suffered amnesia living somewhere else and then gets reunited with his wife. They got reunited all right but sadly, Neil did die and the only consolation part was that after 66 years of being declared MIA, he was given a proper burial and his efforts for the past war was finally recognized. It was sad for Carolyn, her waiting did end but it was bittersweet, she has to come to grips with the reality of her husband’s demise a long time ago. And finding comfort with the thought was that her husband was thinking of her and their son all those time that he was alive. And that her husband’s death was not in vain, He had two chances of coming of back but he chose to sacrifice in order to save two of his comrades and his ultimate sacrifice was his own death when he chose to save the life of a young boy.

A nice surprise was the movie featured the Philippines when it was narrated that Carolyn’s husband was recovered by the Filipino guerillas and he spent the rest time with the Filipinos until his death. I was not expecting that part and a friend of mine actually commented that she now likes JLH not only because she was touched with the story but more so because the story featured the Philippines, it’s not very often that the Philippines gets featured in foreign movies. As a Filipino, I am always amused and amaze every time I hear, the (Filipino) language being use in a foreign movie which is not very often.

I changed my url to http://slaveoftv.blogspot.com

Last night I decided to changed my url domain name fom telemoviejunkie to slaveoftv. telemoviejunkie actually originated from my a title of another blog which originally was confessions of a junkie where I blab about my addictions to televisions and the movies. When I signed-up for my blog, I was not really able to think of my url title and telemoviejunkie was the best choice I got. I came up with other titles like i amaslaveortv or tvlsave but settled with slaveoftv. I think there's a nice ring to the title and just right for my personality, one who's day won't be complete without watching any television. And now thanks to the miracles of the internet, I can catch-up with my favorite shows and even shows that's not airing in my country yet. How cool is that.

Going back to the topic. I am a slave of tv, a fact that cannot be denied.this is now the url I will be using from hereon, wherever I go, whatever I do. I will continue to stay a slaveoftv... hence my url http://slaveoftv.blogspot.com.

Missing Ghost Whisperer

I never saw it coming…The Cancellation of Ghost Whisperer took many fans like me by surprise.

The official reason CBS gave for its cancellation was the rise of production costs and a ratings decline for the last season.  The ratings game just confuses me so I was never concerned about its figures except when it became a reason for the cancellation. Now  according to the ever reliable Wikipedia  GW ratings for season 5 was the lowest rating season for whoever an average of 7.78 million in viewership is still high for a show being aired in the Friday dead slot . Still  form my friend wiki, more  often than not, GW have bragging rights for being the most watched show on Friday nights  which again for emphasis, a dead slot  for the Americans, dead slot meaning viewership are low since most Americans probably prefers to go out, party and have fun than stay at home and watch tv on a Friday night.

When I first heard of its apparent cancellation, I never took it seriously. I mean this is GW here. Season 5 had a complete 22 episode run . True ratings did fall a little but it was still high for its timeslot. No way would CBS cancel a show as cool as GW…but they did. I was actually in denial until  broadcasting resumed in September without GW. Reality came crashing in... I would never be seeing Melinda and Jim’s family again except on re-runs and through dvd.
What makes the cancellation of GW bitter was the fact that, the fans never thought that it would end the way it did.Abrupt. The fans really got blindsided. Given false hope with the idea that ABC might pick it up but never did.

GW was a great show. JLH was great as Melinda Gordon, helping spirits cross-over to the other side. For 5 seasons, we joined Melinda Gordon as she talked and guided ghosts (earthbound spirits as she calls them) reconnect with their loved ones. We shared her joy whenever she helps a ghost complete their UN-finish business before finally crossing allowing both ghost and their love ones proper closure. From the moment Jim and Melinda exchanged I do's, we have followed their journey and always laud Melinda's efforts. We felt her grief when her husband died. Her hope when Jim's spirit took over another man's body just to be with his wife  and the heartache that followed after Jim failed to recognized her as his wife. We rejoice when Jim got his memories back and husband and wife were together again.  We were also there when she became pregnant and motherhood followed suit. We share her concern and apprehension for the welfare of his son who shares her gifts as well as having gifts of his own.

It was just sad. The cancellation was like a bitter pill to swallow. The fans did not deserve it. The least that CBS could have done was maybe make a TV special about GW to tie up loose ends and gives the loyal fans who have followed GW for all 5 seasons the proper closure we are clamoring.  An idea that’s probably far fetched yet here I am wishing for it.

When Jennifer Love Hewitt  said “For a show that was about unfinished business, we didn’t get to finish." She could have never been more right. For a show that lasted 5 seasons. It never got the ending it properly deserves. The closest fans get for a GW closure is through this farewell video showing JLH as she bids goodbye to Ghost Whisperer Fans. Thank you JLH for 5 wonderful seasons of GW.

Laugh Big with THE BIG BANG THEORY

For someone who loves comedy, I was hooked the 1st time I saw the pilot episode for "The Big Bang Theory". Sheldon Cooper was amusing when he  demanded for the return of his sperm cell to the disbelief  of the nurse on duty at the sperm clinic. From that moment on, I knew I could never miss a single episode of the show and now four season running, I'm right here blogging about my top pick for a 30 minute comedy show on tv.

Probably one of the funniest comedy sitcoms on air today, The Big Bang Theory is giving the word Geek a whole new meaning. Geek has become the new Cool and Science has never been this interesting. Instead of your usual comedy programs which has the lead doing some crazy stunts or stupid things to illicit laughter from the audience. The Big Bang Theory’s comic relief lies mainly on the language and conversations within the show. The scripts for each episode are well written and the contrasting attitudes of the characters are also elemental on the show’s success. Conversations are smart and witty, that even the actor’s facial expression alone can make me laugh. The show has successfully incorporated elements of science, religion & human relationships and came-up with a unique 30 minute comedy (20 minutes minus commercials) sitcom guaranteed to give viewers some good laugh. What’s also great about the show is the solid cast from season 1 all the way through Season 4. Headed by CalTech physicist/roommates Leonard Hoftstadfer (a lactose intolerant experimental physicist with an IQ of 173 attracted to Penny and more socially adept than Sheldon’s) and Sheldon Cooper (a child prodigy who started college at 11 years old. He is a theoretical physicist who also happens to be the most socially in-adept in his group though having an IQ of 187. He is an obsessive-compulsive individual who has no sense of humor and cannot detect sarcasm. Sheldon’s odd behavior, arrogance and his perceived idea that he is always right often contrasting from that of his peers often resulting in a lot of funny moments . Their co-workers and equally geeky friends, Howard Wolowitz, a Jewish aerospace engineer unsuccessfull  playboy living with his mother. He is often deemed by Sheldon as someone inferior in their group for his lack of a PH.D unlike the rest of his co-workers. His bestfriend is Rajesh Kootrappali, from India is an astrophysicist who has what his friends refer to as selective mutism wherein he is incapable of speech in the presence of attracted women unless he is under the influence (or thinks that he is under the influence) of alcoho l. And adding flavor to the mix is Penny (last name never made known), the aspiring actress from Nebraska, working as a waitress and living in the apartment across Sheldon and Leonard. She has been known to date attractive men with little to now success. Since the 1st episode of the 1st season, it has been revealed that Leonard is attracted to Penny (much to Sheldon’s disapproval).

The cast and characters are a terrific bunch. Jim Parsons as arrogant and annoying Sheldon I love and hate (frankly I can't think of any actors that fitted Sheldon the way Jim Parsons does.) Johnny Galecki is a perfect fit as the mild mannered and patient Leonard. Kaley Cuoco's doing a great job as Penny, the blond street smart waitress who never fails to cause disturbance to Sheldon's well planned and organized routine and the object of Leonard's affection. Kunal Nayyar plays the role of shy Rajesh with childlike innocence to which I just find amusing and Simon Helberg's portrayal as Howard, the ever creepy geeky playboy completes the wacky cast as they go about adventures and misadventures throughout the show's 30 minute run. The cast complemented well with each other resulting in a wonderful, quirky and just downright funny show I've seen on television. Notable guest star is Mayim Bialik who is perfect as the eccentric Amy Farrah Fowler, Sheldon's female counter-part literaly and figuratively. Introduced in the last episode of Season 3 and continuing with a recurring role in Season 4. And yes to any of you people wondering why she looked familiar and reminded you of someone?  Not exactly someone you knew but someone you've seen... on TV (that is if you're as addicted to TV as I am ) Well let me refresh your memories with just one word  "Blossom ". Remember the sitcom that made Joey Lawrence a teen hearthrob in the 1990's? Yep, ladies and gentlemen, the awkward teenager from blossom has grown into a lady.

Now 4 seasons later The show is still running at its best providing us amusement through their antics, gags and famous cathphrases...Sheldon's "that's my spot, you're in my spot" & "this is my spot" , his signature knock...3 consecutive knocks on the door before  calling for the person's name repeating the same pattern until someone answers the door. When they say laughter is the best medicine, Immediately I think of this show.
